May 3 Scout Race Weekend
Over 40 scouts representing 7 troops signed up for the first ever scout mountain bike race at Mohican Wilderness. The first weekend in May draws scouts from all over Ohio for the Scout Canoe Race Weekend that features many fun events for kids. The weather was perfect with temperatures in the low 70's and clear skies.
Although many were unable to compete since helmets and signed release waivers were required to race, 16 scouts braved the challenging trails of Mohican in their "first ever" cross country mountain bike race. Those that were not able to participate were invited back to compete in other Scout/Kids races that have been added to the official Mohican Wilderness MTB race schedule this year. The course consisted of a short loop, approximately 2.5 miles in length running up to and along the pines near the trailhead at the corner of Vess and Wally Road, through the Johnny Appleseed log cabin, Sue's Valley, Vess Road Trail, along the Outer Rim and back to the staging area.
Mohican Wilderness Racing would like to thank the scout leaders and volunteers who assisted with scoring, course marshalling, and following the racers to assist if needed.
AWARDS:
Trek or Gary Fisher key chains were awarded to all finishers and announced at the scout campfire later that night. The top three finishers in each category also received awards including the following special awards courtesy of Y-Not Cycling and Fitness in Mansfield, Lexington, and Mt. Vernon and Best Bike in Mansfield:
Eric Ward of Troop 402: Received the "Stinky Fish" award for his first ever Endo.
Chris Watson, also of Troop 402, was awarded a thorn resistant tube for his unfortunate encounter with a briar patch.
Eight-Year-Old Brandon Barnes of Troop 3405 received an award for holding his own in the 10-11 year old age category.
